The word “riad” (Arabic: رياض) comes from the Arabic plural of “garden” (rawd), in Morocco in particular it indicates a form of traditional dwelling, built around a garden or an internal courtyard. In recent years, many of these houses have been restored and transformed into accommodation for tourists: the riad is now internationally known as a typical Moroccan hospitable structure.

Usually one to five floors high, riads are insulated by high, neutral, austere walls, with minimal openings to protect from heat and street noise. The riads are organized around a central patio – living / – dining room, as the basis of a well-shaped architectural structure with interior vaulted balconies, inspired by the traditional Arab-Andalusian habitat, Persian heritage and Roman heritage (atrium of the house of ancient Rome). The naturally cool and air-conditioned patio is inspired by the oasis, the Islamic garden and the Persian garden (hence the name of riad derives its etymology). It is usually planted with trees, ornamental plants and features refreshing pools and fountains. The bedrooms are on the ground floor and upstairs while the upper part of the well can be opened, or closed with a cloth or a canopy. The roof looks like an open terrace, overlooking the other roofs and the urban environment.
Riads are generally decorated in a traditional and harmonious, even luxurious way, with ancient elements of Islamic architecture, Moorish architecture, Moroccan crafts, Islamic arts, Arabic geometric figures in Islamic pottery and zellige. Gypsum is widely used by artisans to create real works of art and architectural decorations.
